The sports-loving Hüther family used the tennis court for more than just playing tennis. Whenever it was cold enough in winter, the court was flooded to create an ice rink. Ernst Hüther was an accomplished skater.
Right at the entrance to the tennis court - at the start of the pergola and framed by grapevines - a bronze figure of Silenus carries a young boy on his shoulder. In Greek mythology, Silenus, like the satyrs, belongs to the retinue of Dionysus and is considered one of his tutors. It is not recorded whether the artist who created this statue was Arno Oswald Zauche, the sculptor behind the other bronze works at the Bergfried.
Today, the 1. Tennisclub Saalfeld e.V. uses the facility, which features three clay courts, an irrigation system, and floodlights. The tennis pavilion serves as the club's clubhouse.
In the 1930s, a deer enclosure was located above the tennis court, towards the tower gazebo.

Ever since the Emperor abdicated, a bourgeois lifestyle has been coming into vogue - and tennis is part of that. The Doctor loves the game; only golf ranks higher for him. During the warmer months, I don't have much time to watch the tennis balls flying back and forth - there is simply too much to do all over the park and in the nursery. But there is activity on the tennis court in winter, too. So much for a winter slumber! By late November at the latest, it gets cold enough for us gardeners to flood the courts. It has to be done nice and slowly, and evenly. That is the only way the water freezes into a smooth sheet of ice. And then the Doctor and his family perform pirouettes out there with great skill.
Then it snows, and the snow stays on the ground until the end of March. That is quite practical, even though we gardeners have to constantly shovel snow from the paths leading up to the keep. But my children can ski to school; there is always plenty of snow piled up along the roadside. It is quite a long way into town, after all! Here in the park, too, there are magnificent ski runs and sledding slopes - much to the children's delight. Though it is also to the annoyance of the Doctor's wife; she always worries about the beautiful lawn underneath. But I can put her mind at ease: with that much snow, nothing happens that we gardeners couldn't set right again in the spring.
I like winter for another reason, too: once the leaves have fallen, you get a particularly good view of the beautiful statue right at the entrance to the pergola leading to the tennis court. Especially from behind! Go over and take a look. You will discover that it really is a satyr!
