Die Hof- oder Marktapotheke

Um 1180 wurde es als Sitz für den kaiserlichen Vogt von Friedrich I. Barbarossas errichtet. Davon künden die steinernen Löwen über dem Portal. Nachdem die Stadt 1208 an die Grafen von Schwarzburg fiel, gelangte das Haus 1468 an den Stadtrat, der das Gebäude als Kauf- und Tanzhaus nutzte. Später gelangte es in private Hände.

 

Nach mehrmaligen Besitzerwechsel erhielt der Bürger Balthasar Kamsdorf 1681 das herzogliche Privileg zur Eröffnung der Hofapotheke. 1880 brannte das Gebäude völlig aus, als ein Apothekenlehrling im Keller mit brennender Kerze Benzin holen sollte. In den beiden Jahren darauf wurde das Haus unter sorgfältigem Einbau aller erhaltenen romanischen Teile rekonstruiert. In den Jahren 1996/97 wurden mit Mitteln des Landes Thüringen und der Sparkasse Saalfeld umfangreiche Sanierungs- und Restaurationsarbeiten durchgeführt, die zum Wiedererstrahlen des alten Gemäuers beitrugen.

Als die Stadt Saalfeld gegründet wurde, brauchte sie ein Verwaltungsgebäude. Am Haus kannst du steinerne Löwen sehen. Sie sind ein Machtzeichen von Kaiser Barbarossa.
Vor rund 350 Jahren wurde hier die Hofapotheke des Herzogs eröffnet.

 

Ein Apothekerlehrling war mit einer brennenden Kerze unvorsichtig. Danach wurde das Haus wieder aufgebaut.

The Court or Market Apothecary (Markt 21)

The Court or Market Apothecary is one of the oldest buildings in Saalfeld and was the first secular building in the town. It was erected as a tower dwelling at the time of the town’s foundation and was then the town´s only stone-built house. During the time of Barbarossa’s rule, the town governor, who was the imperial administrator, held office here. This is proclaimed by the stone lions over the entrance portal. It was later became the seat of the town’s mayor. Eventually the town council bought the house and established a retail and dancing hall within it. In the 17th Century it became an apothecary. About 200 years later, due to carelessness on the part of a chemist’s apprentice, the tower dwelling was burnt out, During the immediate reconstruction that followed, parts or the Romanesque structure were reinstated, thus retaining its tower character.

To the right of the Apothecary you will see the Old Castle (Alte Schloss) on the opposite side of the street. This was the residence of the dukes of Saxony.
